WASHINGTONVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
The Motivation of Athletic Commitment

By CONNOR HARRIS
While most seniors are stressing about where to go for the next stage of their lives, there are a select few athletes who are relaxing because they have already gone through all the stress of this decision months ago to commit to a college for sports. While some people do not understand the complexity of the process, committing to play for a college is actually a stressful and daunting task.
College athletes commit to colleges for many reasons, and these decisions are shaped by a combination of personal, academic, and athletic considerations. Firstly, many athletes are drawn to colleges with strong athletic programs and reputations. These institutions offer top-notch coaching staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and the opportunity to compete at a high level. These factors not only enhance an athlete's chance of success on the field, but also contribute to their overall development.
Additionally, athletes often consider the academic offerings of a college. They seek institutions that align with their academic goals and provide an environment where they can excel both in the classroom and on the playing field.
Jennay Amaral is a WHS senior who committed to Manhattanville College for Division 3 Soccer. She expressed, “For my major, I wanted to have the right credentials for after I graduate, so I don't have to worry about what will happen after I graduate.” She also added, “I feel the weight off my chest after committing because now I see what everyone else is going through, like how I felt.”
The prospect of scholarships plays another important role in athletes' decision to commit to a particular college. Scholarships alleviate the financial issue of education and motivate them to choose a college that values and invests in their talents. This financial support enables athletes to focus on their training and competition without the added stress of tuition fees.
Furthermore, the exposure and opportunities that come with playing for a reputable college team can open doors for future athletic endeavors, such as professional contracts or endorsements, adding an extra layer to the decision-making process.
A prospective student will also think deeply about the social aspect of the school . The sense of community within a college team can create a supportive environment that fosters personal growth and teamwork. Athletes often find a sense of belonging and identity within their teams, creating lasting bonds that extend beyond their college years. The overall college experience, including the social aspects, campus culture, and personal growth opportunities, contributes to the appeal of committing to a particular college.
Another senior, Luca Sardella, who committed to Roger Williams University for Division 3 Soccer, remarked “The soccer team made me feel like I was family immediately.” He also joked that “I couldn’t refuse a dorm on the beach.”
Ultimately, the commitment to a college becomes a pivotal moment in an athlete's journey, impacting not only their athletic career but also their overall personal and academic development.
