The atmosphere is electric as Washingtonville High School takes on Cornwall High School. The rivalry between these two schools runs deep with each game bringing a new level of excitement and competition. Parents are yelling, student sections are crazy. This game was a serious nail biter. Both teams are under a lot of pressure and the stakes are high. As the players hit the court, all eyes are on them to see who can rise above and execute as they take the victory. This game is filled with passion, skill, and lots of support and spirit.
After all was said and done, the Washingtonville Wizards came out on top and played one incredible game taking an intense victory with a final score of 49-41. The score was so close during the entire game but the Wizards were able to stay in the lead and not give up.
Aidan Sullivan and Matthew Rodriguez both had the most points scored, Matthew having 12 points and Aidan having 10. The team played amazing, was able to pull through, show their true potential, and get the crowd excited for the rest of this basketball season.
However, the most exciting part of the night had nothing to do with the actual game. When one thinks about high school sports, rivalries are such a big part of sports. They really amp up the excitement. It's all about the fierce competition and the history between the teams. Fans get super passionate and the atmosphere is just so intense. Whether it's a long standing rivalry or a new one brewing, the tension adds so much drama to the games. The rivalry between Washingtonville and Cornwall schools is no exception.
Tyler Bonacic, a senior on the Washingtonville side, was filled with excitement that was built up for this game. He excitedly reported, “This game is so important to my team and I because we have put a lot of time and effort in practice so that we can win this game. I also feel that winning this game and being able to say that we beat our rivals is an amazing feeling.” This team has been working incredibly hard to build their skills together; team chemistry is so important and being able to work together as a team is what will make them win.
Aidan Sullivan, also a senior on the Washingtonville side, voiced, “Proximity definitely plays a major role in the rivalry. Being connected by one road makes the game just mean more. At the start of the season it's always the first two games on the schedule I look for.” He goes on to express that his old head coach from last year, who coached at WHS for 20 years, and his new coach both graduated form Cornwall High School. At this game both old coaches were present: one sitting in the Cornwall stands and the other on the Cornwall bench. This made the game even more exciting.
The rivalry means so much to the players that winning this game was a great step for them in the season. Hopefully it will give them the momentum they need to keep winning throughout the season.
