Resolutions of Washingtonville

While the common belief is that it takes 21 days to form a habit, studies show this is not accurate and the time can vary significantly depending on the person and habit. In fact, research states that it takes 66 days to form a habit. This is why most people quit their New Year’s resolution by the third  week of January.

The senior class of the Washingtonville Central School District were extremely motivated to share their new year's resolutions and whether or not they have stayed consistent with them. The most common resolution in the senior class is going to the gym/ working out. 37% of participants choose going to the gym as their new year's resolution.

While gym culture has taken social media by storm and everyone is in the gym trying to better themselves at the start of the new year, many of these people start to lose motivation. 30% of the seniors at WHS even admit to falling off the wagon already.

The second most common resolution this year was saving money. Most seniors have jobs and are saving their money to get a car, pay for college, or extra expenses. Saving money for big purchases like a car or college is important.

Washingtonville senior Kathryn Dunworth reported, “My new year’s resolution is to save money. I am going to college next year and I want to make sure I am financially stable”

Sadly even this is a hard  vow to keep. “Every year I am not consistent with my resolution but this year I am trying my hardest to be consistent. My resolution is to go to the gym three times a week. I used to go during high school but starting college and a new job has made it hard to find time to go, but I have been making it fit,” explained Washingtonville Alumni Robert Doss.

Going to the gym and saving money made up 63% of the votes. These being the most common resolutions in the Washingtonville senior class shows what the senior class is prioritizing. As for the more uncommon resolutions, people said they would like to learn a language, read more, diet, and some haven’t decided on a resolution yet.

The majority of students at Washingtonville actually claim to have been consistent this far. 69.2% of seniors surveyed have been consistent, while 30.8% haven't been consistent.  With that being said, it is still early. It would be interesting to see what the results are a month from now.

The new year is the most common time to pick up new habits that will better one’s life. Unfortunately, most people don't end up sticking with their new year's resolutions.  Hopefully, the students at Washingtonville High School will.
