This Bistro is the Best

Writer: Stephen WallStephen Wall

When you walk into room 162 at Washingtonville High School on the last Friday of the month you are greeted with the smell of bacon and cinnamon buns. The student workers are happy to see you. This is the Breakfast Bistro.

The Bistro is a life skills simulation teaching students how to work in the community. According to an article in the Washingtonville Central School Districts website, “The Breakfast Bistro is led and operated by Elena Wakeham [and Anthony Finochino] who teaches ASPIRE students at WHS, and students in the ASPIRE program. The bistro opens one Friday a month and serves various breakfast items that are sold to students, faculty, and staff. Once orders are prepared, ASPIRE students personally deliver the orders or prepare them for pickup.”

The Bistro is not just run by teachers. The students play a big role as well. On Wednesday and Thursday,  the students prepare baked goods; they bake and package everything to be sold.

There are so many items to choose from. They have baked goods such as brownies, cookies, rice krispie treats, cinnamon rolls and breakfast sandwiches. Our menu includes vegan and gluten free options as well.

Personally, I love being the cashier and I loved creating our theme song. It was a rap about the Bistro.   I love being part of it because I get to see my parents when they visit and I get to see my former teachers.

Other students enjoy being customers each month. Anna Buchanan, a senior at WHS said, “I really liked the yogurt parfait.  That is my favorite,” while Aidan Geller, also a senior, said that “I’m a pretty standard guy. I like the bacon, egg, and cheese. It is very convenient.  It is a good time, good food, and a good way to end the week.”

Anna also believes that supporting her fellow Wizards is important. “I think it's a great way to support the Aspire classroom and my friends and it is a great way to reward yourself after a long week of school.”

The Breakfast Bistro is every last Friday of the month.  Come one, come all. We hope to see you soon!
