The Village of Washingtonville came alive this past Saturday, December 7, as everyone gathered for the fourteenth annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting. This nighttime addition to Washingtonville’s Whoville brought together families and friends as a community for a night filled with lights, joy, and holiday spirit.
The holiday celebration wasn’t just for the children - the Christmas spirit was felt by everyone. Washingtonville High School seniors Kaylani Vega and Madilyn McEvoy shared their experience at the parade. For Kaylani, “hearing everyone come together to cheer each other up and wish them happy holidays gives you a happy feeling.” Madilyn agrees, believing it was nice to see “everybody in the village coming together celebrating Christmas and watching the cars and trucks in the parade.”
The parade kicked off at 6:00 PM, beginning at Vern Allen Park and making its way through the heart of Washingtonville. There was dancing, singing, and twinkling lights covering trucks and cars. Many individuals from the community participated in the parade. Santa’s appearance in the parade finale delighted people of all ages as he waved to the crowd, which had erupted with delight as he waved to the crowd and took pictures with kids.
Round Hill student Samantha Smith’s favorite part of the parade is the “fire trucks because of the lights.” The final truck of the night is the one to carry Santa Claus, as he leads us to the tree. Each year, most people agree with Samantha. The fire trucks, decked out in Christmas lights and decorations are a Washingtonville fan-favorite. They consistently receive the most applause from the crowd, especially young children.
The tree lighting took place in the center of Washingtonville at 7:00 PM, directly following the parade. With Santa in charge, the crowd counted down in unison, and the tree lit up, followed by a sea of applause and cheers.
The night continued with local restaurants, such as Guilty Pleasures Cheesecakes and F & J Pizzeria, providing meals and treats for everyone. Fresh pizza slices and garlic knots were a popular dinner, followed by zeppoles and hot chocolate for dessert. There was music from the infamous DJ Jeff Blizard, and performer, LunaFaunFire, provided follow-up entertainment, in which she performed a Victorian-themed silk fan dance, followed by a parasol fire dance next to the fire pit, where all were welcome to stay warm.
The Washingtonville holiday celebration was an unforgettable night, filled with community bonding and festive cheer. This event was so special, and we cannot wait to celebrate together again next year!
