When children are asked what they want to be when they grow up, a typical response might be one of the following: police officer, doctor or even a veterinarian. Maybe that is due to the fancy uniforms, or the ability to work with animals, but what these children are probably not taking into consideration are what tasks they will have to complete during their working hours.
When most people read the job description of an athletic trainer, they might think to themselves, “Who would want to wrap stinky feet and treat sweaty athletes for a living?” However, what isn't listed is the boost of serotonin one gets while helping athletes perform to the best of their abilities.
Athletic trainers are the most essential part of any sports program. They ensure that not only all injury prevention and day-to-day healthiness, but they also rehabilitate athletes back to good health.
Washingtonville High School has one of the most knowledgeable and talented athletic trainers in the area. Trainer John Kosowicz, better known around the school as TJ, plays a large role in keeping the Wizard athletes healthy through their grueling practices and games. After completing his education at Dominican University, TJ began his career by working with student athletes in schools. Kosowicz stated, “When I learned about the field of Athletic Training and how it was the marriage of two of my interests, I knew it was what I wanted to commit the rest of my life to.” His lifelong dedication to sports and helping others is what led him into the athletic training field.
Kosowicz begins his work day as soon as the dismissal bell rings. Athletes line up at his office door eager for his expert care. Whether it's a quick tape of an ankle or a thorough concussion evaluation, TJ handles it all with precision and care. His treatments not only help athletes recover physically, but his calm and assuring personality also helps them stay mentally focused. Wizard alumni, McKenna Krauss, stated, “Through my years at Washingtonville High School I always felt a sense of safety and comfort with TJ treating my injuries.”
In addition to his hands-on care, Trainer John provides a safe and welcoming space where athletes can decompress. His office becomes a space where students can chat about their day or mentally prepare for the challenges of an upcoming practice or game. It's a place where athletes can find emotional support beyond the physical treatment.
Although their work can go unrecognized, athletic trainers like TJ play a crucial role in ensuring that athletes not only recover from injuries but continue to thrive. It's a career that may not get the glory and glamor of other professions, but for those who work in it, the rewards are much greater than any trophy.
