From the Bleachers: Girls Lacrosse - Washingtonville Wizards vs. Kingston Tigers

By: Marquis Frias

On Thursday, May 2nd, Washingtonville’s girls varsity lacrosse team faced up against the Kingston Tigers in a non league section 9 matchup.

Heading into this game, the Kingston Tigers were 4-6 and their last game against Niskayuna, which ended in a loss for the Tigers, stretched their long losing streak to 5 games. Only one of these games were against division opponents.

Meanwhile for the Wizards, they entered this battle 3-5 coming off a 16-3 blowout against Middletown.

This game was expected to be a pretty even mid scoring match, as both teams have shown the ability to score a lot of goals and hold their own on the defensive side.

To kick off the game, Kingston would score four goals on the Wizards defense. Knowing that they would need to answer back, senior attacker Addie Rodriguez scored to make the game 4-1. Kingston would then score three straight after a stretch of weak defense by the Wizards. Washingtonville would then make another goal to make the score 7-2 to end the half.

To start the next half, the Tigers had the Wizards on lockdown. The goal scored late in the first half by the Wizards would be their last goal of the game, and Kingston would only continue their scoring with seven goals in the 2nd half. The game ended in a final score of 14-2.

After the game, senior Leah Chan, who plays defense for the Wizards, commented after the game “I think the defense was solid as usual during the game and we did a good job at not getting a lot of yellow cards as a team compared to other games.” For future games, Chan wants the Wizards to work more as a team, “we tend to blame certain things for the way we are playing and make excuses and I believe taking accountability as a whole team will really help us.”

The girls will play their next game against the Valley Central Vikings at home on Thursday, May 9th. Be sure to support the girls’ softball team by attending all possible games and following their instagram @wizardsgirlslax.
