Decision Day

By: Jennay Amaral

May 1st. While most people see this day as the first day of May, high school seniors all over the nation know better. This day, known as Decision Day, is one where students unite to display their plans for the future.  They show up to school in gear that represents the next phase of their lives and the students of Washingtonville High School were thrilled to participate this past Wednesday.

For many college applicants, May 1st is used as a date to solidify where students would like to attend college. This date also provides applicants and families more time to appeal when dealing with financial aid for colleges.

Katie McVey, a senior at Washingtonville High School, will be attending Stonehill college to major in Biology. Katie conveyed, “I choose this major because I want to go into medical school after getting my degree.”

Washingtonville High School guidance counselor Kimberely Kelly voiced, “Seeing students wear their college shirts is exciting because we get to learn where they will be going to college. It's a symbol of their hard work and achievements. It marks the culmination of high school, but also the beginning of students' futures.”

Kelly added, “Never stop learning. Try something new. Get involved. Get to know your college professors. It is okay to make mistakes. Ask for help. Be your own advocate. Find your passion and then go after it!”

Even though May 1st is typically represented as a college decision day, there are some of our seniors here at Washingtonville High School who decided to pursue a different type of journey.

Jenny Garcia addressed, “I wanted to become a Marine since junior year because in the future I want to become a police officer, and I wasn’t fully committed to going the college route, so therefore I chose to go towards a military route for four years.”

Jenny went on to add that when choosing what branch she wanted due it came to a final decision when some marines attended one of her C-Tech law enforcement classes. Jenny will be shipped out on July 9th which is a week after graduation. She expressed “I am pretty nervous, but excited for what the future holds for me and I want the pride and discipline that the Marine Corps holds!”

Decision day is a day that represents high school seniors' next step in their futures. No matter what seniors have decided, the next step for their journey is coming soon.
